What should you do when you’re approaching traffic lights that have been green for some time?

Ease off the gas and be ready to stop when approaching a set of traffic lights that have been green for some time. If the traffic lights have been green for a while, you need to anticipate the lights changing. Check your mirror for following traffic and be prepared to stop.

Why is it important to check your mirrors?

Check your mirrors on the approach to a traffic light that has been green for some time. Look out for the following traffic and slow down in good time if necessary. If the lights change and you slow down without checking your mirrors, you could cause a serious accident.

For more information, check out this guide on the traffic light sequence.

What shouldn’t you do as you approach green traffic lights?

Avoid doing any of the following on the approach to a long green light

Increasing your speed

Do not speed up to make the light. If you speed up and the lights change, you could find yourself going through a red light.

Braking harshly

Do not slam the brakes if you reach the solid white line, and the lights are still green. Harsh braking could cause a serious accident.

Remember, always be ready to stop when approaching a traffic light that has been green for some time.
