Who is Responsible For Making Sure That a Vehicle Isn’t Overloaded?
The vehicle’s driver is responsible for ensuring the vehicle isn’t overloaded. Carrying heavy loads affects your vehicle’s control and handling characteristics. An overloaded vehicle is harder to control.
As it’s the driver’s responsibility, you could face a significant fine, disqualification, or imprisonment if caught in an overloaded vehicle.
Loading your vehicle
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when loading your vehicle.
Make sure your load is secured
It isn’t enough to check at the start of your journey. You must check your load is secured after heavy braking, sharp steering or any other aggressive manoeuvre. It’s easy for a heavy load to come unstuck after a sharp change in direction or speed.
Distribute the weight evenly
To maintain stability, distribute your load across the whole floor area. Keep the centre of gravity low and close to your vehicle’s centre line. Place heavier items and the bottom and lighter items at the top.
Pick the right load-securing equipment
Choose the right restraints for your load. The key is to ensure your restraints are strong enough to secure your load. If you choose the wrong type of restrain, your load could become unstable, affecting your vehicle’s handling.
